Here's a woman I've always admired, for her honesty, her openness and her natural sense of irreverance. I would have loved to have met Governor Richards, and now I guess I've missed my chance.

When I lived in Austin in the late 80s, I saw Ann Richards at a great restaurant The Brick Oven. She was holding a doggie bag (cool!) and was trying to get out of the place, but everyone was trying to get a piece of her. As I watched her sail through that obstacle course of open hands and "We Love You"'s etc., I thought to myself, "Now there is a true Texan, and a great human being." She finally walked out with her doggie bag and silver hair intact, and I had a memory I'll cherish forever.
Thanks for the great comment...it makes me feel a little closer to Ms. Richards just reading your post.
She always reminded me (although she was much younger) of my grandmother...who had a very salty personality but also had a mischievious twinkle in her eye. Women like this are quite an inspiriation to those of us who follow.
